Iron Man 2

REVIEW: Ironman 2 IMDB

MOVIE INFO

  • Producer -
  • Director - Jon Favreau
  • Writers - Stan Lee, Justin Theroux
  • Primary Actors:
    • Robert Downey Jr - Tony Stark
    • Don Cheadle - Lt. Col. James Rhodes
    • Scarlett Johansson - Natsha Romanoff
    • Gwyneth Paltrow - Pepper Potts
    • Sam Rockwell - Justin Hammer
    • Mickey Rourke - Ivan Vanko
    • Samuel L. Jackson - Nick Fury
  • Appearances:
    • Ion Musk - himself (space X, Paypal, Tesla motors)...where was he? In Monaco?
    • Stan Lee - himself

INTRO STUFF

  • CHUCK
    • CSS, CSS, CSS, Javascript, used redbox rentals for the first time (Daybreakers)...very cool.
  • MIKE
    • Proposal from hell is finally done...ruled my life (and why cast is late) and Red Dead Redemption

SYNOPSIS

  • It doesn't really work for this one...

WALKING IN F&T (FEARS & THOUGHTS)

  • CHUCK
    • Would the previews ruin a part of the experience...there was a lot of different scenes in the previews....yes, yes they did.
    • Saw Ironman at midnight showing - tons of people...interesting experience with the movie...built in laugh track.
  • MIKE
    • Really liked the first - excited about it all...Downey really carried the first movie, more of the same...
    • Stark Vs. Hammer - interested in Stark's contemporary...

FIRST ACT

The Russian

  • The Russian
    • Old man passes on his knowledge - why was he so angry - I thought the old man worked with Tony's dad...he stole his invention?
    • Interesting dynamic that untimately fell flat...like a lot of this movie...
    • Fathers' legacy to sons - Okay, I get it already...

  • The Stark Expo
    • Did we not see the scene where she kisses the helmet before he jumps (previews) - Cutting room floor - and confusiuon...are they involved? They kind of got together at the end of the first movie, but there was nothing about them being a couple in this one...

  •
    • Going to his new car (not available yet) we see life through his eyes in a 1st perspective - that was a nice sequence...

  •
    • R8 convertible was cool, but the hardtop looks better...my opinion (a guy here in Clear Lake has one...sweet)
    • What was the point? It the dying Stark trying to make the world a better place for him being in it? If so, then have some kind of plan for Iron Man...but there is none...who to pass that to..

...LATER SCENES

  • Senate
    • Gary Shandling - the angry Senator...hilarious - this is what I came for...

  •
    • The clear super iphone gadget Tony Stark used to take over the monitor in the court room
  • Monaco
    • How did Rourke get hit by a 5000 lb Bently and not be crushed at all? Destroyed the poor Bentley - it was a Rolls...Phantom...
    • I am lost on the motivations of Ivan...was he really trying to NOT KILL Stark...I would have almost liked him to have more of a plan...was he trying to die by Iron Man???

  •
    • His private jet flying from Monaco - Dassault super sonic private jet?
  • Birthday party
    • He Roared at the people through the glass
    • People don't freak out when he blows up the glass…they would have freaked out.
    • I get it, he was supposed to be in the thrown of self-destruction (anger stage of acceptance, if you will), but the whole bit seemed very Arthur, or even Chaplain...
    • Fight with Rhody...what was that even about...

  • Meets Samuel Jackson
    • Sitting on the giant donut - seems to be in of movies lately (2012, ?) - GTA: San Andreas, had a version of the donut, Sam Jackson was in the game...(police officer)

  •
    • Loved the Avengers connections - finally became a part of the plot instead of just a short blurb
  • Airforce
    • Hammer and his guns - Loved his description of the guns and the 'ex-wife' bullet
  • Discovery of new power source
    • Forced to sit down and figure it out
    • Cool how his father hid the design, but it was somewhat guessed
    • Tony trying to talk to the girl and the thing on the desk rotating - excellent quirk
    • Loved how he built the particle accelerator and how it was chopping everything up - when you are tony Stark you have this type of stuff lying around...defense contractor...somewhat believable.
    • Showed who Tony Stark is….brilliant, but he's going to destroy some things to get his projects completed.
    • Captain America - the shield in pieces? Why was the shield there?
    • Dad's message
      • Dad's voice and film was not very good (to portray it old)

Why didn't they just film it with old equipment to get the effect?
Similar to 3D - film with 2D then convert...why not film with the old equipment to get the 'old' look?

  •
    • Played AC/DC in movie - but not Black Sabbath Iron man - would have fit when he got his new power source
    • Why not get a new power with his new powersource (super strength - better blast, etc)
    • Work area
      • Computer would ask him questions? How annoying would that be…"what is that, what is that..."…shut up computer!
      • His interface in the work area - hologram, laser scanning, interactive, etc
    • This whole deal was at the root of the problems with this movie...He solved all of his personal problems at the end of the Second act...the movie should really be over at that point...the macguffin should actually have had something to do with the Expo, something that he had to do there to save his own life...in the midst of the drone attack...

  • The final battle
    • The droids
      • Loved the fighting scenes, there was a droid per service; very cool and original
      • Flying robots never ran out of ammo, the missiles seemed to reload themselves when they showed up - be realistic here and not there? Why not make it electric bullets or something.
    • Glass falls onto the auditorium into the crowd - tons of people would have died
    • PG-13 - the robots are flying around destroying everything, but no one gets hurt
    • Loved the 'super' one-time use laser he used at the end of the fight...sweet
    • The cheesy use of the one-shot 'ex-wife' - a smoking cigar.
    • Grrr...there was very little action in most of the movie, then drone chase Iron Man for 20 minutes (left like it) and he & WarMachine tear them all up in 30 seconds...30 seconds from the preview...

...THE ACTORS

  • Actor of the movie...Hammer - great actor, entertaining
  • Robert Downey Jr. - always a fun time.
  • Johanson was quiet, but did a good job - a lot of spinning and twisting in order to get the momentum to drop the guys - cool
  • Don Cheadle replaceing Terrance Howard...thoughts???
  • Robot arm still steals the complete show...

QUESTIONS:

  • What was in New Mexico that the guy was going to now look after - who might have this guy been? - the hammer
  • Did Tony Stark's dad steal from that old man or was there a miscommunication?

THE MACGUFFIN:

  • MacGuffin - the new power service

CLOSING THOUGHTS

CHUCK Rating: 4.0

  • Positives
    • Great acting, fun story, lots of well made action, Avengers - got me ready for the continued series to expand!
  • Negatives
    • A few cheesy scenes (use of the 'ex-wife', drunk with iron man suit on?), previews ruined a large part of the movie for me - about every major scene was already posted in the previews….we don't need to see what is happening throughout the entire movie!!!!

MIKE Rating: 1.5

  • Positives
    • Downey Still breaths life into the character...

  • Negatives
    • Plot is lost in many confusing contradictions
    • None of the characters reach any kind of potential
    • Film is not well made.
